The Memphis Argut of March 28th gives editorial prominence to statements that President Johnson has writ ten a f'ri"nd in West Tennossee ft letter de claring that ho is only waiting for Texas to do as the other Southern States have done in order to issue bis pro lania ion declaring a general amnesty, and tbnt the lately re beilious States having resumed all their re i'Uion.-i, to be restored to the Union, are en- v tilled to equal rfrhis The President fur ther fays he intends firmly, to Bee Aj)nt all the States have that representation in Con . gress to wbich the Federal Constitution en titled thnm and .to recognize a majority of Representatives of all the States in Contrres-. In the same letter the President announced the policy ho intends to pursue in regard to Tennessee, which, while we deem proper for the present to withhold, may assure our readers that it will at onco lilt our S ate up out of the mire of oppression from an irre sponsible ol'gnrchy and place it by the side of the other States on the platform of equal rights'. New York, April 2. The returns from forty eight towns, ineluding Hertford, Nor wich and New London, gives Hawley, (U.) 7,076. nd Knglssh, (D) 5,683. Later, 2:3U p. m. New Haven gives En ' glish 1550 majority. The Hartford full vote is as follows: Hawley, 2512, English, 2,991. 9:30 P. m. Gen. Hawley will have a ma. jority of 1500 to 2000 in the State. The vote is the largest polled in six yers. In New London county all but two towns gave Hawley about 23000 majority. Chicago, April 4. That we will ever hold in grateful mem ory those through whose patiiotic, not mer cenary or partisan services, the dignity ol the Uepuhllc and Ihe integrity of the Union wero reserved; and we denounce as a bine intuit the gallant living and heroic dead, the pre-ent efforts of the Radicals to conreit the atton l vic'ory into a partisan triumph, seek ing to make the late war one of cornuest. in stead of the suppression of the rehellinn for uljugation instead of restoring the Uuion for the negro instead of the white man. 11. The Democratic State Convention met day before yesterday, at Portland, And organized by ele ting L F Grover President, and Vic Trevitt and B. L. Norden Secretaries! The convention had a long and busyession during the day, but did not make any nominations The following are the resolutions adopted as a platform : 1. Reeolved, That we adlrm as the end of our political faith and practice, our Sleadfast (levoiion to the following principles, viz Equal aud exact justice to all men ot what eei- slate, p.trty or sect; the support of the State Governments in all their right4, and of the Fe leral Government in all its vigor: jealous care of the elective franchise; the supremacy of the civil over tbo military au ibority ; opposition to the centralization of power; economy In all public expenditures; the general diffusion of education ; the en rouragement of morality and the highest civ ilization ; the right of every man to worship God according to the dictates of his own con science; freedom of spetch, freedom of the press, and freedom of the person, under the protection of the habeas corpua. 2. That the action of the mnjorit) in Con gress in refusing to admit the Representatives ut eleven states, is au unwarranted assump tion of powet upon the part of Congress, rev olutionary in iu tendency, and dangerous to the liberties of the people ; that we do and , will sustain President Johnson in bis deter mioation and efforts for the complete reslor , atioo'of the constitutional rights in all the Slates, and we unreservedly approve his veto of tbe Freedmen's Bureau and Civil Rights 1 bills, and all bis constitutional efforts to pre vent the fanatical ru jority in Congress from changing or destroying our cherished form of Uovernruent. 3. That tbe position assumed by Preslden Johnson, that the Representatives from the Southern Slates ought to be at once admitted ' to seats In Congress, and tbnt legislation af fecting sucb Slates while tbey are unrepre sented is unconstitutional, meets wiitf our beany approval. 4. That the assumptions of the opposition that the Democratic party is in favor of reuu dialing tbe public debt, and that it is in favor of nullification and secession, is slanderous and lulse. ' 5. That we endorse the sentiment of Sena tor Douglas, that this Government was mad on a white basis for tbe benefit of the whit '" roan, and we are opposed to extending th right of suffrage to any other than white men 6.' That tbe exemption of 'United States bonds from taxation is substantially tbe i . emplion of rich men from taxation because tbey are rich, and the! taxation of poor men because tbey are poor, and we are in favor of taxing those bonds lor county, State an municipal purposes.
